National Minority Health Month

April showers brings spring flowers. Yes April is packed with all sorts of good things. There is a lot to keep up with. Let's look at how Covid 19 has affected people of color with more minorities being infected with and dying of the virus in unprecedented numbers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) has laid out certain criteria that they look at to help address the health and disparity of minority individuals. Below is taken from the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/minorityhealth/CHDIReport.html

What is Health Equity?

Health equity is when everyone has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible.

What Are Health Disparities?

Health disparities are differences in health outcomes and their causes among groups of people.

Reducing health disparities is a major goal of public health. Achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and improving the health of all U.S. population groups is one of the goals of Healthy People 2020External

Some things that most minorities face is by way of education and income. Low wages decreases the types of healthy foods people can afford, so people are left buying foods that are prepackaged, or highly processed. These foods are loaded with sugars, salts and preservatives that further create a health disparity. Poor schools, infrastructure and neighborhoods continue to create below standard conditions and a recycling of poor health outcomes. High blood pressure, Diabetes and Heart Disease are results of lack of resources, not skin color. Access to quality care, not just hospitals that treat sick people, but programs to teach about health, food oasis available to inner city residents can help alleviate some of the disparities.
